Ubuntu 11.04 Review – Linux Distro Reviews

A rather in depth review of Ubuntu 11.04 Beta 1. Sporting the new Unity Interface, Ubuntu is now bringing something unique to the buffet of distros out there. Overall, bugs are present as it’s only a beta, but definitely shows promise as the new UI and bundled apps create a cohesive user experience that’s logical and easy to pick up and use. Excellent execution on the part of the Ubuntu devs, they’ve been working incredibly hard, and their work truly shows. Full release due at the end of April 2011.

Just a quick look at the latest Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 1, and some of my own thoughts on the future of not just the Linux Desktop, but THE COMPUTING DESKTOP including Windows 8 and Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion! You can find me here: Google+ plus.google.com Twitter: @ingalactic Peace!

Linux Tutorial Series Part 02 (Securing Ubuntu 11.04)

For Linux beginners, I recommend to check out Linux Tutorial Series Part 01 to learn how to install Ubuntu. In this video, I’m gliding over how to secure Ubuntu. There is a part in this video when I mentioned about using passwd -l to lock accounts inside /etc/shadow file, make sure you don’t lock the user accounts you want to use, OK? Or else, you may not be able to log into Ubuntu using those users! Enjoy!

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 slow/laggy

Hey guys, sorry for posting this topic again (I’ve seen several posts regarding slow performance issues here and elsewhere on the web). But everything I found so far was no help to my specific situation. Hopefully someone here can help me get this running properly because I am excited to be making the switch from windows to Ubuntu! As I said I’m new to Ubuntu but I should be able to follow some basic Terminal commands and whatnot.

Sorry for the long post! I want to give as much info in the first post as possible. Let me know what else you need to know (and where to find it if it’s advanced stuff).

I first installed 11.04 and it was really slow and using close to 100% CPU just opening new windows. Everything was choppy from the wheel showing a web page was loading to moving windows around the screen. I eventually realized that 11.10 was the newest version available and thought upgrading might fix the problem, but it didn’t. Right now with just google chrome open gkrellm is idling around 20% and jumps to 99% just by opening the software center (which takes a good 10 seconds to open).

Also, maybe related or not, I am having an issue with my graphics card driver. I go to settings > additional drivers and it shows I have 2 not activated. 1 – ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver, and 2 – ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver (post-release updates). I can install/activate the first one, but the "post-release updates" one always fails. Then after that one fails it says the first one isnt activated again! Watching videos on youtube or hulu are pretty choppy. I’m guessing that has something to do with the chopiness of my whole OS but not with taking so long for an app to load and using so much CPU.

Specs
Laptop: Toshiba Satellite L555D
Processor: AMD Turion II Dual Core Mobile M500x2
Memory: 2.7 GiB
Graphics: VESA RS880M (experience:standard)
Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit
500GB hard drive (system info says 483)

I’m very close to just trying to install 10.04 (but coming from windows 7 I really want Unity) and if that doesnt work just give up! I hate giving up on technology though so PLEASE HELP!!!

Thanks in advance and again I apologize for the lengthy post.

Battle: Ubuntu 11.04 vs Windows 8 Developer Preview

Full article here: wp.me In the video below, we’ll see how Windows 8 Developer Preview does against Linux build Ubuntu 11.04 in a startup and resource comparison. Both operating systems have been installed as is, with no editing of settings except for the Wi-Fi connection network after startup. Both operating systems were installed on two identical Dell Inspiron Mini 1012s, with 1GB RAM… You be the judge. Full article here www.chromeattack.com

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 11.04: connection problem from Firefox 5

Hi,

I have a strange problem with Firefox. I’m on Ubuntu x64 11.04 and from Firefox 5 I have a problem to navigate. I can use Firefox normally for a variable time and suddenly it can’t connect to any page. I think that the source of problem is in the proxy, because if I use Firefox without proxy all works well. I have tried to change the network setting from auto-detect configuration, use system configuration to manually configuration but nothing change. Before the problem began, I was using the use system configuration option. I’m sure that the my network doesn’t have any problem because with the others browser all works well.
What do you think?

Thank
