For kicking off a new week of Linux benchmarks, here are some results of a high-end Intel Extreme Edition workstation when comparing the bare metal host and KVM virtualization performance between Ubuntu 12.10 and the earlier Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS release and then the RHEL-based CentOS 6.3.

A week after releasing CentOS 6.1, the CentOS project launched version 6.2 of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) clone, while Oracle released its own RHEL 6.2 variant with Oracle Linux 6.2. Meanwhile, Red Hat unveiled a beta of RHEL 5.8, and announced strong third-quarter earnings.

CentOS 6.1 has arrived to bring the features of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.1 to those who can live without a Red Hat subscription. CentOS 6.1 offers non-proprietary improvements found in RHEL 6.1, including virtualization performance optimizations, enhanced development tools, and some YUM package management enhancements.

The CentOS project announced CentOS 5.6, which clones the vast majority of features found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.6, including its full embrace of the Ext4 filesystem. Meanwhile, Red Hat will announce a new cloud application-building platform at its Red Hat Summit May 3.
