Final Ubuntu 11.10 spiffs up Unity, adds ARM server support

Ubuntu 11.10 (“Oneiric Ocelot”) was released, featuring makeovers for its Unity desktop and Ubuntu Software Center, a switch to Thunderbird email, and a new Deja Dup backup tool. On the server side, Ubuntu 11.10 adds ARM support, as well as a new “Juju” cloud management framework.

Linux Mint 12 RC1 adds GNOME 2.x-like extensions to GNOME 3.2

Focus Writer Update Adds .Odt Support

Full-screen distraction free writing app ‘Focus Writer’ has been updated. 

The application, which sports custom-themes, configurable toolbars and a daily goal tracker amongst its various features, has now gained basic support for the opening and saving of .Odt files (the file format most commonly used by LibreOffice).

SimplyMEPIS 11 adds LibreOffice and a faster Firefox 4

The MEPIS project announced the release of the Debian Linux based SimplyMEPIS distribution. SimplyMEPIS 11 moves up to Linux kernel 2.6.36.4 and the KDE 4.51 desktop, switches from OpenOffice.org to LibreOffice 3.3.2, and provides FireFox 4.0, which was recently recompiled to run much faster on Linux.

Fedora 15 alpha debuts GNOME 3, adds cloud appliance builder

The Fedora project released an alpha version of Fedora Linux 15 (“Lovelock”), debuting GNOME 3 and its new GNOME Shell UI layer. Fedora 15 features KDE 4.6, LibreOffice, a cloud-oriented BoxGrinder appliance builder, and the availability of SystemD as the default configuration system, says the project.
