[all variants] Which version of Ubuntu / Lubuntu would be best? (newbie linux user)

I have an old windows xp laptop that i want to try out Linux on – the laptops main roles will be watching mpeg vids, listening to mp3s and web surfing, with some occasional light office use – the machine itself is a dual core pentium Lenovo laptop, with one gig of RAM – I’ve tried a couple of live cds out on my Windows 7 laptop – Ubuntu 13.04 and Lubuntu 12.04.03 lxle – on the newer laptop they both work easily well – my question is……. are the specs of the older machine good enough to run Ubuntu?….. or, should I go for the Lubuntu lxle which advertises itself as suitable for older machines?…. or is there another variant of ubuntu which would fit the bill better?

[all variants] Snooping my activities on wifi connection ?

Hey all,

Is there any way to get to know if my online activities are being snooped upon ? How can I be sure that when I log into my social networks, email and other accounts my passwords are not being taken? How can I be sure that when I use a wifi network (that I legitimately pay for) but not own, the owner of it is not fallowing my every single step? Is there any way to know that just by having access to wifi signal that I pay for ?

[all variants] Volume control won’t work properly

When I try to change the volume nothing happens. The volume slider in the sound indicator is inactive and when I click the "sound preferences" nothing happens. I can get sound from some applications, like banshee and spotify through wine, but Totem and games like teeworlds won’t play any sound.

I’ve had this problem before ever since 8.04, but normally I could just restart the session and get it to work again. Suddenly that won’t work and it annoys me a bit.

Thanks for help
